Maria
Johnston

Maria was born in San Francisco on the same day the Golden
Gate Bridge opened for business (to get her age check the Bridge
history). She grew up in Mexico City. She attended Stephens in
Missouri then transferred to SMU. Following graduation her
plans to return to Mexico were cut short as she had just met her
husband to be, Robert and decided Dallas was the place. They
have two sons and two granddaughters.
Maria spent her high school years riding horses, playing golf,
duplicate bridge and a Mexican guitar. While at SMU she took
Flamenco guitar lessons where she met Robert. He got Maria
into running. Maria has completed 21 marathons (best one 3:08)
in Waldneil, Germany and one ultra marathon (7:47 a record for
43 year olds that year) at the Jackson 50 in Dallas. She’s now
happy participating in 5K and 10K races. Maria discovered
triathlons when Robert took them up. She participated in a
number of Olympic distances but is now happy with the sprint
distances which she is aiming for next spring and summer.
Robert continues to be her faithful coach. (NOTE)) Maria’s racing
age will be 71 this year!! How awesome and inspirational is
THAT!
