Capital of Texas Triathlon May 25, 2009 |
On Labor Day morning nearly 2000 triathletes assembled at Auditorium Shores on the banks of Lake Austin. At 7 am the Olympic course started with 7 teammates sprinkled in amongst the various wave starts. After the cold 70 degree swim, the athletes raced 4 loops of the downtown course, down Congress Ave. around The Capital building and out and back on Riverside, again, again and again. Then came the 10k run 2 loops, as the temperature began to rise towards 90 by the end. Lael Martin was our fastest finisher taking 2nd in his age group. Congrats to Tracy who took 1st in the 45-49. Stephanie raced well at got a 2nd place in the 50-54. Ashley Mac had a great race taking 4th and Kelly taking 9th of the 101 in their age group. Korey had a solid performance stepping up to the Olympic distance and placing 16th of 51. Chris Lane rounded out the team finishing 6th in the 60-64. |
Next came the sprint course, which started at 9am, Even though they raced exactly half the distance of the Olympic course, the heat was an increasing factor. Of the day’s two top sprint stars, one could be predicted, the other came out of nowhere (actually Toronto, Canada). Becca’s fast bike and run propelled her to a first place 30-34 and 4th overall! Lauren Rock, Stephanie’s niece from Canada was visiting and racing her first triathlon and wearing the Loncar colors. Lauren stunned us all by winning the 20-24 division and placing 11th woman overall. Scott improved by 5 minutes on his 2008 results, actually leading his division off the bike before getting passed by 5 runners eventually taking 6th out of 31 in the 50-54 division. Morris recovering from a bad shoulder injury finished next. Our newest teammate Lisa Schwab suffered through the swim to post one of the fasted bike splits on the race to finish solidly in the middle of the pack. Lacey missed a turn on the bike and is still out on the course. Austin was a blast and is highly recommended for 2010. Click Here for results. |
