River Cities Triathlon
August 1, 2010
The 30th edition of probably the most prestigious and most competitive
sprint distance triathlon in the South. The great Dave Scott ( six time
Hawaiian Ironman Champ), now 55 was on hand to speak at the carbo-
loading dinner, to race and to hand out awards after the race. The morning
was hot as expected and the “open” wave went off at 8 am sharp. We had
Alma and April racing in that wave. Then came everyone else. The half mile
U-shaped swim ( a little long actually) was calm and smooth. The 18 mile
bike was one loop around Lake Cypress, with low wind, a few rollers and
featured nice smooth roads. The run was 5k and a little bit of everything,
with a road, and path, some off roading and finishing on sand by the
beach.
When it was all over we had some standout
performances. We had two woman on the overall top 5
podium. Amari was 2nd with a 1:27, and Steph was 4th
with a 1:30. Steph became the first 50 year old to
podium in at least the last 13 years , maybe longer.
April racing “open” was excluded from the age group
awards but finished in 1:33 ( 11th woman). Alma also
raced “open” and scored a 2nd Overall Masters with a
1:34. Our fastest Strong Arm of the day went to young
Korey who blasted a 1:19 good for 2nd in the 20-24 AG
and 9th overall. Next came Travis with a 1:25, and Eric
on his heels in 1:26. Coach Whitten dusted off the ole
jock and placed 3rd in the 40-44 with a nice 1:30.
Morris came in a bout 30 seconds later. Then came
Seth (1:37), Chris Lane (1:38), Ralph ( 1:39) and Robyn
( 1:44). Colleen took 2nd in her AG with a 1:53 and got
her coveted picture with Dave Scott. Scott aquabiked .
Bridge just got in right before this story was
completed.
